Why Treatment For Autism Needs To Be Carried Out Safely

Treatment for autism remains one of the most hotly debated topics in the whole of medicine, and this is sure to continue for a long time to come. Before any coherent program for treatment can be worked out, it is necessary to have some idea of the cause of the problem in the first place. As of now, we do not have this knowledge. Research has been carried out into genetics which suggests that chromosomes are the basic cause of the symptoms, but it not known what causes this to happen in the first place.

The best which can be done in the circumstances is to test various treatments, and note the effects that they have on patients. To make this effective, it is necessary to have large sample sizes. There is such a difference between the symptoms which autistic patients experience that far reaching clinical trials are needed. So far, the best base for treatment is the simple common sense diet and environmental advice which could be given to just about anyone.

Common food allergens such as wheat gluten and casein are thought to aggravate the symptoms of autism, and should therefore ideally be eliminated from the diet. On the other hand, getting enough of the essential vitamins, minerals and Omega-3 acids will have a positive effect. As these are totally natural treatments which will benefit just about anyone, they can safely be used in autistic children. It is best, though, to have medical supervision if there is going to be a dramatic change to the diet over a short period of time.

The other treatments which are totally safe are the behavioral ones which are used from the time that autism is first diagnosed. These involve the use of toys and learning aids to stimulate the mind of the child. Even something as simple as a flashing light box can provide hours of amusement, and can have a calming effect on the morale of the child. Taking this a step further, a soft toy which incorporates an electronic learning device can even help the child begin formal education in a better frame of mind.

There is much treatment for autism which is controversial, and which can even be dangerous to a patient in some cases. A major example of this is chelation treatment, which is supposed to remove mercury from the body and cure the autism. In the first instance, it is clear that mercury does not cause autism, although as with any toxic substance it may be an aggravating factor. More than this, though, is the fact that the treatment can put pressure on the liver and kidneys. Never undertake this type of treatment without supervision, and in any case be sure that you fully understand the reason behind your chosen treatment for autism.
