Are Chelation Autism Treatments Effective And Safe?

Chelation autism treatments are among those which are sometimes recommended as alternatives to conventional medicine. The need to find such alternatives is bound to be keenly felt when orthodox treatments have relatively little to offer, as is the case here. Despite decades of research, we are still not certain what causes autism in the first place, and we have no certain cures for it. Many treatments are recommended, some of which have the potential to do some good in relative safety, while others can be positively dangerous in certain situations.

The difficulty which autistic children have in adjusting to social situations is almost certainly caused by some form of chemical imbalance in the brain. However, the cause is believed to be genetic, meaning that there is no hope of a cure. The idea that harmful substances ingested into the body can be responsible for the onset of the condition is an unlikely one, but it forms the basis for the belief on chelation therapy. Chelation is believed to remove mercury from the body, and there is no doubt that this substance is toxic. Any link between this and autism remains tentative.

Most of the treatments which are prescribed for autism are long, drawn out, and involve a lot of effort. The idea is to change behavior over time using repetitive techniques. It is easy to see why a technique which promises a far quicker solution is going to be popular, but it is as well to understand that the treatment does have potentially serious side effects. Although there is no scientific proof of the effectiveness of chelation, there is clear evidence that it can cause liver or kidney damage.

The best way of dealing with autism and related conditions really depends on an accurate diagnosis being made early on. Even the Autism Society itself does not attempt to recommend individual treatments as a cure all for different patients. The core philosophy of the organization is that each individual needs to be treated according to the wishes of the individual and their own immediate family. There is no official recommendation for chelation, because there is no acceptance of the belief that mercury is the cause of the problem.

The Internet can be a wonderful source of information, but it can also be a source of disinformation if the wrong material is read. This applies especially to controversial treatments such as chelation autism therapy. It is vital to read from a wide range of source material if you want to discover the truth, and always give official sites a greater credence. The consensus of opinion is that chelation therapy is ineffective against autism, and that it introduces further health risks and potential complications. Make sure you do your research if you are considering chelation autism.
