Why Autism Causes Are Likely To Be Genetic
Autism causes have been a cause of much speculation for many years, and the simple truth is that we are scarcely any nearer finding definitive answers than we were when we started. There has been a great deal of research into genetics, using advanced techniques and even more advanced equipment, and this research is starting to bear fruit. There has also been a great deal of research into environmental factors, but in this case there is little which has been definitively learned. The most significant fact of all, though, is that autism is never caused by bad parenting or any lack of attention from the parents.
The most we can say at the moment is that the primary causes of autism are likely to be genetic. Research into the genes of mice using gene replacement suggests that similar symptoms are caused by genetic disorders. This is a useful finding, even if it is at the very earliest stage. It is also useful to know that the genetic problems which lead to autism happen very early on in a child's life, possibly in the first two months.
Research into possible environmental factors in ongoing, and any conclusions which have been drawn are in the negative. That is, certain substances in the immediate environment which could have been causes of autism have been largely eliminated. We can now be certain that environmental factors are not the primary initial cause of autism, but it remains possible that pollutants in the environment are exacerbating factors. This is an area which is attracting a lot of attention, and research is being carried out on a large scale.
Until it is possible to give a definitive answer as to what is causing autism, it is impossible to come up with anything which can approximate a cure. Even the relieving of symptoms is proving to be a difficult task, although there are factors which appear to help. The same health advice which would benefit just about anyone, that of making sure that the autistic child has enough of all of the major vitamins, and cuts right down on chemical additives in food, appears to benefit the autistic child dramatically.
As research into autism causes continues, it is more than likely that our ability to cope with the condition will improve. If you are the parent of an autistic child who is very young and has just been diagnosed, you have every right to expect that we will know far more by the time the child becomes a grown adult. Taking steps to get the child interested in education and to improve their attention span is likely to pay off in the long term, and can help in the future when we will be in a far better position to determine the primary autism causes.
