Why Autism Awareness Is Increasing Rapidly Over Time
Autism awareness has increased greatly in the last twenty years, now that it is easier than ever to disseminate information through the Internet. The Autism Society of America has actually been in existence since the 1960s, although few knew of its existence until far more recently. Not only has awareness and publicity increased, so have the numbers of people being treated for the condition. It is genuinely not known whether this increase in numbers is due to an increase in the numbers of people suffering from autism, or whether it is simply that more cases are being properly diagnosed.
What this increase in awareness has meant is that there is more understanding of people who find it impossible to interact properly in social situations. Even when there is nothing which can be done to ease the suffering of autistic people who have to go into situations they are ill equipped to cope with, their task can still be made easier if there is more understanding from the people they have to deal with. There is certainly a far greater understanding of autism from those who work in education.
It is also important to increase the awareness of autism to prevent people being sucked into treatments which are only speculative at best. There is no shortage of people claiming revolutionary results from treatments which are outside the mainstream of medical science, and all too often these claims have nothing to back them up. In some cases, the treatment could even have a negative effect. One example of an unproven treatment is the chelation which is applied to remove mercury from the body. There is no proof that mercury is a cause of autism, and the treatment can affect the kidneys and liver.
The increased awareness and understanding of autism is more useful than ever at the time the condition is first diagnosed. As this is a condition which cannot be cured, and where the symptoms need to be worked with and lessened, being able to diagnose and treat the condition early is very important. Increased awareness means that, although parents are bound to panic to some degree, they are at least aware of what is happening. They are also aware that they need to bring in competent medical professionals as quickly as possible.
No-one has done more to promote autism awareness than the Autism Society of America, which has been doing great work for nearly half a century. As the numbers of diagnosed cases continues to increase, and information becomes easier to publish through the Internet, the Society's role is sure to grow still further. If you have an autistic child, you should look no further for your initial information and support. Once your own task has been made easier, you can then get involved with the Society to make your own contribution in raising autism awareness.
