Why Aspergers Is Subtly Different From Autism

Aspergers syndrome is a condition which is very closely related to autism. So closely related, in fact, that the Autism Society covers this condition, as well as several other related ones. The most significant difference is that Aspergers is more mild, in that the patient can still use and understand language. As with autism and all of its related spectrum conditions, there is no known cure, and we are not really any nearer to finding out the exact cause. All of these conditions appear to be genetic in nature, but there is nothing to tell us what causes the genetic problems in the first place.

People who suffer from these spectrum disorders do still have difficulties in social situations, and with certain aspects of language. One of these aspects is in understanding any sentence which does not have an absolute clear literal meaning. If you are communicating with someone who has this condition, make sure you are as clear as you can be in what you say. The tone of voice, which is often used to add meaning in a conversation, will also often not register any meaning with a sufferer.

As with all of the other related conditions, there is no definitive treatment for people to follow, and so absolute certainty as to what causes the condition in the first place. Most of the treatments which are followed are aimed at easing the symptoms by improving diet, eliminating aggravating toxins, and gradually changing behavior patterns. The dietary methods yield good results, but the patient will probably need help in following through with them. Behavioral changes can be learned with enough practice, and many sufferers are able to live fundamentally successful lives.

When the symptoms first occur, it may be difficult to tell Aspergers from autism or any of the related conditions. There are two approaches you need to take. The first is to concentrate on the use of language to see how much the patient understands. This will tell you, in time, exactly which condition you are dealing with. The other approach is to begin those treatments which are appropriate for any condition, such as the dietary enhancements and Omega-3 supplements.

As time goes by, more behavioral therapies will need to be tried, and this is best done using expert supervision. It is not that there is anything hazardous about the treatments themselves, but a qualified expert will be able to notice the subtle signs which tell them exactly how to proceed. When you see a genuine expert in these conditions at work, you will realize how they are able to achieve such results. To find the right practitioner, it is best to find a support group to join. This can be local, or worldwide through the Internet, it does not really matter. An autism support group will also be able to help you with Aspergers.
